RAS KARBI

Ras Karbi was born and raised in Jamaica, where he formed his first band, Now Generation, at age 17. He later moved to the U.S., blending reggae, rock, jazz, and R&B while touring with his six-piece band. He studied music and sculpture at the Jamaica School of Art, RISD, and Brown University, and toured with Sun Ra’s Arkestra before joining Bob Marley on the first leg of his U.S. tour. Returning to Jamaica, Ras recorded his hit Discrimination, featuring Peter Tosh and members of the Wailers. Banned by the Jamaican government for its anti-discrimination message, the song gained even greater popularity. Back in the U.S., he composed and starred in the Broadway musical Reggae, earning praise from The Village Voice, and released the U.S. hit No Work Today. In 1983, his song Jamaica I’ll Never Leave You Again won the Jamaica National Song Contest. Since then, Ras Karbi has toured globally, released multiple albums, and remained active in humanitarian work. He lives in the U.S. and continues to share his unique brand of reggae worldwide.
